We’d love to report that the pace of dispensary openings has picked up, but unfortunately, licensing and local approval is still moving slowly. There are now 30 recreational dispensaries in the Commonwealth, with five licenses fully approved for new dispensaries due to open soon.

The Cannabis Control Commission has received 230 applications for retail dispensaries, and has given provisional licensing to 43:

  • Six in greater Boston
  • Five north of Boston
  • 12 south of Boston, on the Cape Cod and the islands
  • Seven in the western suburbs and central Mass
  • 10 in the Pioneer Valley
  • Three in the Berkshires

The good news is that the number of dispensaries will likely double next year. The bad news is, a majority of Commonwealth residents may still be a far from one.  Only six licenses have been given provisional approval in Greater Boston, where nearly half the state’s population lives.

While a majority of towns enacted moratoria on retail dispensaries, most of those have expired. 60+ towns enacted permanent bans, so regardless of what happens with license approvals, they’ll still have to drive to another town to purchase their weed.

Boston itself still has no dispensaries, and there’s only one close to the city in Brookline Village. In July, the Cannabis Control Commission granted a provisional license to Dorchester-based Pure Oasis, the first economic empowerment applicant approved to date. At least seven others have completed applications: Alchemy League, Ascend Massachusetts, Berkshire Roots, Core Empowerment LLC, Green Line Boston, Jof Enterprise Inc, and MedMen Boston.

The South Shore has none, but one is slated to open in Plymouth in December.

The western suburbs and Greater Worcester have the most, with nine in operation and one opening soon.

The Pioneer Valley and the Berkshires are also reasonably well served, with 11 dispensaries between them.
